In the mid 80s we joined sister-in-law Steffie's parents, Jim and Ida May Cain on two extraordinary expeditions.  First to the Galapagos Islands and later to the Baja California peninsula, cruising the Sea of Cortez aboard Lindblad's Polaris.  Both times we were in the company of the former First Lady, Lady Bird Johnson, a childhood friend of Ida May Cain.  We became friendly and continued to see her on occasion in New York City.

Below is a small selection of photos from those voyages.

Mrs. Johnson treated these expeditions seriously assigning each of us research projects regarding the places we planned to see and expecting detailed presentations during dinner about our assigned subject.

These were the early days of VHF videotape and Paul lugged 28 lbs of camera, recorder and battery in two waterproof totes ashore in rubber Zodiacs (called "pangas" in Galapagos).  Everyone crowded about to see the daily rushes.  When we returned home, we edited the material into a narrative video and provided copies to quite a number of fellow passengers.
